5/1/10: NJ Auditor Says Stimulus Money Was Steered Away From Private Sector Jobs

From the "We All Shoulda Seen This Coming" Department:

New Jersey's comptroller says the state inappropriately steered federal stimulus money to provide summer jobs for youth away from the private sector to toward public and nonprofit agencies.

In a report issued Thursday, comptroller Matthew Boxer said the state met the minimum requirements of the $17.7 million grant.

The money was used by local workforce investment boards to subsidize the cost of hiring young people for jobs.

Boxer said there were missed opportunities to get more people in private sector jobs. He says the state did not tell the boards that such jobs were eligible, partly out of fear that unions would complain.
