President Obama, at his Friday press conference on failed promise to close Guantanamo: "Well, the -- you know, we have succeeded on delivering a lot of campaign promises that we made. One where we've fallen short is closing Guantanamo. I wanted to close it sooner. We have missed that deadline. It's not for lack of trying. It's because the politics of it are difficult."If you really want to get technical, Obama isn't REALLY saying he failed. He's claiming that his success hasn't come as soon as he expected - because of the interference of others ("politics"). He even says "I wanted to close it sooner," as if Guantanemo is already closed in some alternate reality and he's looking back at the process with the benefit of professorial hindsight.

This is reminiscent of Rahm Emanuel's "apology" over Obama's handling of Israel and the Middle East. Rather than a standard apology, Emanuel was actually saying that the administration "screwed up the messaging" on the issue. In other words, they feel somewhat responsible for the fact that the media prevented us from understanding the magnificence of their policies.
Keep in mind, this guy has prematurely evacuated Iraq and is setting us up for a massive failure in Afghanistan with months of dithering followed by a moderate surge and an artificial withdrawal deadline...
...But he can't close a terrorist prison because "the politics of it are difficult."
