Obama Fails to Close Gitmo

Jan 22, 2009: A Date That Will Live in Failure

Sometimes an "Obama failure" is good for America. This is just such a case:
President Barack Obama, in a setback to hopes for the quick closing of the Guantanamo Bay prison, reluctantly signed a bill on Friday barring suspects held there from being brought to the United States for trial.

Making plain he would fight to repeal language in the law obstructing civilian U.S. trials for Guantanamo terrorism suspects, Obama said he was left with no choice but to sign the defense authorization act for fiscal 2011.

"Despite my strong objection to these provisions, which my administration has consistently opposed, I have signed this act because of the importance of authorizing appropriations for, among other things, our military activities in 2011," Obama said in a statement.

Phew! Of course, this failure is made even more embarrassing for President Obama because he signed an executive order that called for the detention facility to be closed back on January 22, 2009:

Of course, when Guantanamo wasn't closed in a year, President Obama made Greg Craig the scapegoat for the failure. Then he kinda/sorta of admitted to failure - but he did it while he was in China and while the nation was reeling over Eric Holder's announcement that he would grant civilian trials to Al Qaeda terrorists.

Either way, it's a failure for Obama and a victory for America. Hope! Change!
